Tortoise Services We Offer
Our Manchester clinic is equipped with the specialist diagnostic tools required to assess health through a tortoise’s protective shell:
- Pre- & Post-Hibernation Checks: Essential 'Fit for Fridge' (or box) assessments to ensure your tortoise has sufficient fat reserves and no underlying infections before and after their winter rest.
- Shell Health & Trauma Repair: Treatment for shell rot, soft shells (MBD), or physical injuries from falls or garden accidents.
- Beak & Nail Trimming: Professional grooming using specialized tools to correct overgrowth that can interfere with natural feeding.
- Microchipping: A legal requirement for many Annex A species (like Hermann's) and vital for the recovery of lost or stolen tortoises.
- Blood Profiling & Endoscopy: Advanced diagnostics to monitor liver and kidney function, particularly important for senior tortoises.
- Parasite Management: On-site faecal analysis to screen for worms and protozoa, which can thrive in garden-roaming tortoises.
- Respiratory & ‘Runny Nose’ Treatment: Addressing Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI) caused by dust, draughts, or pathogens.

FAQs – Tortoise Vet Care
A pre-hibernation check is vital. We assess the ‘Jackson’s Ratio’ (weight-to-length), perform a physical exam, and check for any signs of illness that could be fatal during dormancy.
Pyramiding is the abnormal upward growth of the shell scutes, usually caused by incorrect humidity or diet. While we cannot reverse existing shell shape, we can help you correct the husbandry to ensure future growth is smooth.
A sturdy, high-sided box with a towel or newspaper on the bottom is best. Ensure they are kept warm during the journey, especially in the cooler Manchester months.
We offer transparent, upfront pricing for all our exotic consultations. Please contact our Manchester surgery for our current rates.
