What Is Pet Insurance and How Does It Work?
Pet insurance is designed to cover unexpected veterinary costs arising from accidents, illnesses, or sometimes preventative care, depending on your policy. You pay a monthly or annual premium to your insurer, and in return, they reimburse you (or us directly, depending on the claim type) for eligible costs.
There are three ways you can use your insurance at GoVets:
- Standard Claim (you pay in full, then claim back)
- Direct Claim (we claim directly from your insurer; you only pay the excess)
- Pre-Authorised Claim (for planned treatments, your insurer confirms coverage in advance)
Types of Insurance Claims at GoVets
1. Standard Insurance Claim (Most Common)
You pay GoVets in full at the time of treatment. We complete your insurance form and provide all clinical documentation needed to help you claim the cost back from your insurer.

- No pre-approval needed
- Fastest and most straightforward route
- You remain in full control of your claim
- Claim is between you and your insurer
2. Direct Claims (We Deal with Your Insurer)
For larger treatments or when you’re unable to pay upfront, we may agree to claim directly from your insurer. This means you only pay:
- Your policy excess
- Any costs your policy doesn’t cover (e.g., food, supplements, out-of-scope care)
Eligibility Requirements:
- Direct claims must be approved by management
- We must receive written confirmation of payment from your insurer
- A £20 admin fee applies to each direct claim (non-refundable)
- Direct claims are typically only available for ongoing conditions, surgeries, or high-value treatment plans
3. Pre-Authorised Claims (For Planned Treatments)
If your pet needs scheduled surgery, diagnostics, or specialist treatment, we can work with you to apply for pre-authorisation from your insurer. This ensures your treatment will be covered before it begins.
How it works:
- We issue a full clinical report and detailed treatment plan
- You (or we) submit this to your insurer for approval
- Your insurer confirms in writing whether it’s covered
- If approved, we may proceed with a direct claim

What You Need to Provide
To make any kind of insurance claim, we require:
- Your insurance provider name
- Your policy number
- Your full name and address
- Your pet’s name, species, breed, and DOB
- A completed claim form (online or printed)
- Details of any pre-existing conditions
- Your insurer’s claim instructions
Failure to provide full and accurate information may delay your claim.
How Long Do Claims Take?
This depends on your insurer. Typically:
- Standard claims: 5–20 working days
- Direct claims: up to 30 days (depending on insurer response time)
- Pre-authorisation: up to 7–14 working days before approval
We submit claims promptly but cannot control how quickly your insurer processes or pays the claim. Some may request additional documentation, delay approval, or reject claims unexpectedly.
What Pet Insurance Does NOT Usually Cover
It’s important to read your policy terms. Common exclusions include:
- Pre-existing conditions (unless covered after a waiting period)
- Preventative care (vaccines, flea/worming, dental cleaning)
- Prescription food & supplements
- Pregnancy or breeding-related care
- Behavioural consultations or training
- Routine check-ups not linked to illness or injury
Your Responsibilities as the Policyholder
Whether making a standard or direct claim, please note:
- You are financially responsible for your pet’s care at all times
- If your insurer declines the claim, you must pay the full balance
- It is your responsibility to:
- Understand your policy cover
- Submit required forms and information
- Chase your insurer for updates if needed

In a direct claim, we deal with your insurer directly, and you only pay your excess. In a standard claim, you pay us and reclaim the cost from your insurer yourself.
No. Direct claims are only approved in select cases. We do not offer direct claims for first-time clients or for routine appointments.
You are liable for the full cost of treatment. We will support you in appealing a decision, but cannot guarantee success.
