Is Microchipping a Legal Requirement?
For Dogs
Since 6 April 2016, all dogs in the UK must be microchipped and registered to an approved database. Owners who fail to comply can face fines of up to £500.
For Cats
From 10 June 2024, microchipping will also be mandatory for cats over the age of 20 weeks. Like dogs, failing to comply could lead to fines of £500.
Important Note: Even if your cat is an indoor pet, microchipping is still essential. Cats often escape or get lost when frightened, especially during moves or emergencies.
How much does microchipping cost in Manchester?
Microchipping costs £20 for dogs and £25 for cats at GoVets in Manchester, including VAT. Microchipping is free for members of the GoVets Healthcare Plan, which costs £24 per month. Microchipping has been a legal requirement for all dogs in England since 2016 and for all cats since June 2024. GoVets microchips dogs, cats, rabbits and other small mammals at its Miles Platting practice, open Monday to Saturday.
