Travelling Abroad with Your Pet
– What You Need to Know
Taking pets abroad requires planning and preparation. Each country has its own entry rules, and missing a step could lead to delays, quarantine, or even refusal of entry.
At GoVets, we’ll guide you through the entire process to ensure your pet is fully compliant and ready to travel.
Essential Travel Checklist for Dogs and Cats
Microchipping (Mandatory)
- Your pet must be microchipped before any vaccinations are administered.
- Chips must comply with ISO standards and be registered with your contact details.
Vaccinations (Compulsory)
- Rabies Vaccine – A requirement for most countries. This must be done at least 21 days before travel.
- Additional vaccines may be required depending on your destination (e.g., Leptospirosis, Tapeworm).
Animal Health Certificate (AHC)
- Post-Brexit, Pet Passports are no longer valid for travel.
- Instead, you’ll need an Animal Health Certificate (AHC), issued within 10 days of travel by a government approved vet.
Fit-to-Fly Certificate
- Most airlines require a Fit-to-Fly certificate, confirming your pet is healthy and able to travel.
Parasite Treatments
- Some countries mandate treatments for fleas, ticks, and worms, including a tapeworm treatment within 24–120 hours before entry.
Travel Crate (IATA Approved)
- Pets must travel in secure, ventilated, and airline approved crates to meet IATA standards.
Return to the UK
- Pets re-entering the UK must meet the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) requirements, including microchipping, vaccinations, and an AHC.
